Recently, Boracay made the news as it reopened its shores to visitors after being rehabilitated for a few months. Clearly, rehabilitation had a positive impact, resulting in cleaner beaches.

Here at Region 8, we also have our share of beautiful beaches, such as the Kalanggaman Island off the coast of Palompon, Leyte. And like Boracay, this island paradise should be protected.

The Department of Social Welfare and Development proves that it also cares for the environment. Recently, DSWD staff from the Disaster Response Management Division paid a visit to the island to conduct a cleanup drive.

Armed with sacks, DRMD staff picked up discarded styrofoam and plastic waste, as well as leaves and other biodegradable materials. The activity proved to be a success, as DSWD was able to collect several sacks of trash. These were turned over to the Local Government Unit for processing and disposal.

Here at DSWD, we recognize that we only have one home – our planet. And that is why we must do what we can to care for it, to create a greener future.
