The improvement of a 141 meter barangay road is now being enjoyed by 400 households of Brgy. San Vicente in Matag-ob Leyte. Once impassable due to pothole and muds, the situation becomes worse during rainy days.

The Php 892 thousand pesos-worth barangay road is funded by DSWD Kalahi CIDSS program and collectively accomplished by community residents and the local government unit in a span of two months.

The community identified barangay road as their intervention to make their lives easier now that the road is passable and accident-free. The road helps boost the economic growth of the barangay as products of farmers like copra costs lesser from Php 50.00 to Php 25.00.

The fare of “habal-habal” is lowered as well from Php 100.00 to Php 50.00. It has been a long hope of the residents to have an access road because they encounter problems of accidents and expensive fare. It is no doubt that farm to market road is a priority even in their previous sub-projects implemented through Kalahi CIDSS program.

More than the physical project, the people have been thankful for the program because of the processes and principles it introduced to the communities.

Brgy CaptainAndres Ecoy stated that aside from the concrete result of barangay road they want to continue Community-Driven Development because it lets the people solve the pressing needs of their community.

For Allan Gabriel Jazon, the Barangay Sub-Project Management Committee chairperson, the program has given the voiceless a platform to speak. In his case, he was once a bystander and a static observer in their community but when he was entrusted to be a leader all has changed. He said , “By being a volunteer, I got more confidence of myself in giving service to the people, even if I am only an ordinary person.”

He also believed that the barangay road is the result of the efforts of community and local government unit whom from working on the necessary documents to implementing the sub-project.

On the other hand, Procurement Team member, Julito Noya said, “I can contribute to the progress of our community by being active in Kalahi CIDSS program. If I will not stand for my community, who will?”

The municipality of Matag-ob has other 10 sub-projects implementing this year, with all provinsions of barangay road, drainage canal, farm to market road, street light and slope protection to serve 1, 416 target beneficiaries. The said sub-projects aim to reduce the poverty situation among the residents.
