TACLOBAN CITY – One hundred twenty residents of Bgy. 88, San Jose, this city, have availed of the Cash for Bgy 88 1Building Livelihood Assets (CBLA) program under the DSWD Field Office (FO) VIII’s Sustainable Livelihood Program (SLP).

Such was reported by DSWD FO VIII’s SLP Project Development Officer (PDO) Russel Gariando, as confirmed by CSWDO’s Livelihood focal person May Reyes and Bgy. 88 Chairperson Emelita Montalban.
Gariando, together with Reyes and Montalban, went around lately to the six large gardens to monitor the residents who are working on their vegetable plots. On the other hand, barangay councilors do their daily rounds to check on the attendance of the workers.
Residents of this barangay, particularly those from Alimasag, Baloc, Costa Brava, Fisherman’s Village, Mahusay and Villsingko, have cleared parts of their ‘backyards’ and other unused land in the area, in order to plant vegetables in plots, some for their own consumption, and others to sell.
They have built fences around their little veggie plants to keep them safe from stray animals.
Bgy 88 3Before the approval of this project, Gariando reminded each group of their commitment, and urged them to continue tending the vegetable gardens in order to benefit from selling the produce.
She told that each CBLA beneficiary is paid P260.00 per day for 15 days to work on this project, making P468,000.00 the total amount to be given out to this barangay.
Virginia De La Peña, 63 years old, and one of the beneficiaries of the program, said that this was good exercise for her as she gets to wake up early in the morning before the sun is up to see to it that weeds do not grow in the communal garden. She stops at 9:00 a.m. when there is heat and resumes later in the afternoon and early evening when it is no longer too hot to work outside.
The community has asked for the assistance of the Department of Agriculture for eggplant, patola, ampalaya, pechay, okra, and bell pepper seeds. They have also added some seedlings from their own gardens like lemongrass, camote Bgy 88 4tops, and squash, among others.
The project started on September 5, and will end on the 23rd of the same month, this year.#
