Indeed, marriage is a vocation, a ministry, and a lifetime commitment, as the title of the two-day Gender Sensitivity for Spouses Seminar organized by the Policy and Plans Division of the DSWD Field Office VIII, goes. Held this week at Milka Hotel, Tacloban, fifteen female employees and their spouses took two days off to participate in the program designed to open up communications between the sexes in order to bring mutual understanding and respect of each others’ roles.

Marilyn Lim, a local expert on gender issues, led the training sessions, with Suzette Ogsimer of the DSWD Field Office VIII assisting.

“Do not underestimate the power of touch ! Your priority is your spouse; if it becomes a problem, solve it ! Let your partner know how much you appreciate him. Put your partner over your work. Be interested on what your partner is doing. Reserve weekends for family.” These were some of the key points that Lim emphasized to the participants.

Lim had sessions which facilitated discussions highlighting positive practices between men and women, and the realities they are facing that need re-focusing and improved understanding.

Participants also discussed on their various roles, expectations, and the importance of both genders. They identified their strengths and weaknesses and their resolutions as well.

In closing, Policy and Plans Division chief, Yvonne Serrano, congratulated the participants and told them to consider what changes could be made in their relationships to foster an environment of respect, dignity, and understanding for both genders.

The training was held in line with the observance of the National Women’s Month. #DSWDParaSaNakakarami #DSWDMayMalasakit
