In support of the Purple Wednesday campaign of the Philippine Commission on Women, DSWD Field Office VIII conducted the activity “Juana Para sa Pamilya: Navigating Rights, Support System, and Welfare of Solo Parents,” aimed at addressing the challenges faced by solo parents—most of whom are women. The event was attended by DSWD employees and Local Social Welfare and Development Officers from across the region.

Since the enactment of the Expanded Solo Parents Welfare Act, DSWD Field Office VIII has been providing continuous technical assistance to LGUs in its implementation. However, many solo parents and local government units still encounter challenges in understanding certain provisions of the law. This activity sought to clarify these concerns, particularly regarding available government benefits and support services. Additionally, discussions covered child custody and child support, which are common concerns among solo parents.

To further strengthen support for solo parents, representatives from the Commision on Higher Education (CHED), PhilHealth, Bureau of Internal Revenue (BIR), National Housing Authority (NHA), and the Technical Education and Skills Development Authority (TESDA) were invited to discuss their respective programs and services, ensuring that solo parents have access to financial assistance, healthcare, education, housing, and livelihood opportunities.

As part of the Purple Wednesday campaign, this initiative aligns with the advocacy of the Philippine Commission on Women to raise awareness of issues affecting women and girls, especially those who are vulnerable and disadvantaged. Through strengthened collaboration and continuous public awareness, the rights and welfare of solo parents can be better protected and promoted.
