The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office VIII continues to strengthen its monitoring of the ongoing implementation of the Local Adaptation to Water Access and Breaking Insufficiency through Nutritious Harvest for the Impoverished (Project LAWA at BINHI) in convergence with the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged/Displaced Workers (TUPAD) program of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Regional Office VIII.
A total of 1,500 beneficiaries in Tacloban City are engaged in communal gardening and the enhancement of repair, rehabilitation and maintenance of water sources under this cash-for-work modality. On May 8-9, monitoring visits were conducted in Barangays 106 Sto. Niño, 93 Bagacay, 83-B Cogon San Jose, 100 San Roque, 98 Camansihay, 105, and 101 New Kawayan where beneficiaries are cultivating a variety of vegetables including 𝘱𝘦𝘤𝘩𝘢𝘺, 𝘰𝘬𝘳𝘢, 𝘵𝘢𝘭𝘰𝘯𝘨, 𝘱𝘢𝘱𝘢𝘺𝘢, 𝘸𝘢𝘵𝘦𝘳𝘮𝘦𝘭𝘰𝘯, 𝘴𝘸𝘦𝘦𝘵 𝘱𝘰𝘵𝘢𝘵𝘰, 𝘢𝘭𝘶𝘨𝘣𝘢𝘵𝘪 and other crops in garden areas, using deep wells as their main water source. The New Kawayan site, the largest among them, spans one hectare and uses a solar-powered submersible pump for irrigation.
DSWD Field Office VIII affirms its commitment to continue monitoring the project closely to ensure its proper implementation and to provide timely updates as part of its support for sustainable community-based livelihood efforts.
