The hardworking mothers of the Samahan ng Masisipag na Ina ng Caridad (SAMICA) from Barangay Caridad, Salcedo, Eastern Samar are reaping the fruits of their hard work through the Local Adaptation to Water Access and Breaking Insufficiency through Nutritious Harvest for the Impoverished (Project LAWA at BINHI) of the Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office VIII.

For the month of May, SAMICA members harvested a variety of produce, including 40 kilos of ampalaya, 20 kilos of sitaw, 20 kilos of upo, 25 kilos of pakwan (watermelon), and 30 kilos of pipino (cucumber). These were sold in the local market, generating a total income of P5,800, with P2,800 from ampalaya, P1,200 from sitaw, P400 from upo, P650 from pakwan, and P750 from pipino.

From their backyards to the marketplace, these women are proving that when empowered, mothers can become strong providers and changemakers in their communities. Project LAWA at BINHI continues to support communities by improving food access and providing livelihood opportunities in communities like Caridad.
