PALO, Leyte – The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office VIII has started the 20-day learning sessions of Tara, Basa! Tutoring Program (TBTP) in Samar Province on Monday, July 01, 2024.

A total of 375 Tutors and Youth Development Workers (YDWs) were deployed across the above-mentioned province to tutor 2,000 enlisted struggling or non-reader school learners and conduct family development sessions for the parents or guardians.

To monitor the implementation, the DSWD Field Office through its Social Technology Unit and TBTP Technical Staff conducted a series of field visits on the first day of the learning sessions.

In a courtesy call with Hon. Eunice U. Babalcon, Municipal Mayor of Paranas, Samar, she expressed her support for the program and assured assistance for its successful implementation.

“Should you need anything from the local government unit, you can coordinate with our social welfare and development office or directly to me. Just let me know what we can help, and I hope for the program’s success,” she said as she welcomed all the deployed tutors and YDWs in the municipality.

In the region, the simultaneous rollout covers 19 municipalities and two cities in Samar.

As per TBTP guidelines, each tutor will handle a maximum of 10 learners and one YDW for a maximum of 50 parents or guardians.

In return for their service, they will receive financial support equivalent to the prevailing daily minimum wage in the region covering the entire duration of the learning sessions. This is on top of the capacity development and service credits they will earn after the program.

On June 28, all identified Tutors and YDWs from Samar State University and Northwest Samar State University in the City of Catbalogan and Calbayog, respectively, received financial assistance of Php 2,000 to support their needs during their deployment in assigned schools.

The DSWD Field Office here spearheaded the payout in partner schools followed by a pre-deployment session with the community coordinators.

Meanwhile, parents and guardians who will complete the learning sessions covering effective parenting, dynamics of Filipino families, challenges in parenting, and children’s rights, among others will receive cash assistance amounting to Php235 per day.

The rollout of the TBTP implementation phase will conclude on July 26, 2024. ###
