The 5-day Capability Building for reading tutors and Youth Development (YDWs) in Tacloban City was concluded on Friday, April 4, 2025.
A total of 477 college students from Leyte Normal University (LNU) and Eastern Visayas State University (EVSU) completed the training which began on March 31.
The activity aims to capacitate and prepare them as tutors and YDWs who will conduct reading tutorials to struggling or non-reader pupils and carry out Nanay-Tatay sessions to the parents of learners.
The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) and pool of trainers from the Department of Education and partner state universities simultaneously led the activity in LNU and EVSU.
In her closing message in EVSU, RD Grace Subong expressed her gratitude to the schools for its steadfast commitment and support for this year’s expansion of the Tara, Basa Tutoring Program.
Moreover, she encouraged the newly-trained tutors and YDWs to value their roles, take responsibility and accountability to deliver what is expected from them.
“This is more of a service to our children in our communities who will soon be like us. You now have that capacity that you will be able to teach these children to read and impart knowledge to our parents as first teachers at home,” she said.
Through the cash-for-work component of the program, the student-beneficiaries will receive a daily pay equivalent to the Regional Daily Minimum Wage for the 20-day deployment between May 19 to June 14, 2025.
This year, the field office has a total target of 1,512 college students, 5,040 learners, and 5,040 parents covering Samar province and the cities of Tacloban and Ormoc.
Meanwhile, key officials of the two universities were also present during closing ceremonies.
