A total of 132 public elementary schools in Eastern Visayas opened on Monday for the 20-day Tara, Basa Tutoring Program (TBTP).
Of the total number, 84 schools are in Samar, 32 in Tacloban City, and 16 in Ormoc City accommodating 1,512 college students, 5,040 learners, and 5,040 parents.
School heads designated as TBTP focal, faculty members, and some non-teaching staff welcomed the beneficiaries during the kick-off day on May 19.
As a counterpart, the Department of Education (DepEd) has allowed the use of their classrooms and other facilities for the 20 days session until June 14, 2025 just before the new school year starts.
Moreover, DepEd also assists in the monitoring of the learning sessions and provides technical support to the college students.
The TBTP is a collaborative effort between the DepEd and DSWD designed to provide short-term employment and educational opportunities to underprivileged college students from state universities and local colleges through Cash-for-Work (CFW).
The student-beneficiaries will serve as tutors and YDWs to conduct reading tutorials to struggling or non-reader pupils and carry out the Nanay-Tatay sessions to the parents of learners, respectively.
