LOOK | The Department of Social Welfare and Development (DSWD) Field Office 8 continues to monitor the ongoing implementation of the Local Adaptation to Water Access and Breaking Insufficiency through Nutritious Harvest for the Impoverished (Project LAWA at BINHI) in Carigara, Leyte, in convergence with the Tulong Panghanapbuhay sa Ating Disadvantaged Workers (TUPAD) program of the Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE).

Under the project, beneficiaries are given short-term work to help improve access to water and food in their area. Currently, they are involved in clearing and maintaining irrigation canals, planting mangroves, growing vegetables in communal gardens, and building small water storage facilities for farms. These community-based tasks aim to reduce the risk of water shortage and boost food supply, particularly in areas vulnerable to climate change.

Participants receive wages based on the region’s prevailing minimum wage, giving them a source of income while contributing to the welfare of their own communities. Through the sustained efforts of DSWD Field Office 8 and its partners, the project offers both immediate livelihood support and long-term impact for the beneficiaries in Carigara.
