Beneficiaries of DSWD Eastern Visayas’ relief operations might soon find two bags of vacuum-sealed rice in each Family Food Pack (FFP) sometime in the future.

In an effort to improve the quality of its relief items, DSWD Eastern Visayas is now starting to use vacuum-sealing in preparing rice for its FFPs. Through this process, three kilos of rice are placed inside a bag which is then packed by a vacuum sealer. This effectively ensures that the rice will be delivered in better quality, since the vacuum slows down deterioration. This also ensures that the rice will be virtually pest-free, since insects cannot live in vacuum.

Currently, DSWD has one vacuum packing machine which was provided by DSWD’s National Resource Logistics Management Bureau (NRLMB) last October 23, 2020. This machine is capable of producing an average of 70 to 80 bags everyday. According to DSWD’s Disaster Response Management Division (DRMD) Logistics focal Rey Peñaranda, the division is planning to request for more of these machines to increase the number of bags produced. “Kung magagawa, mas maganda na vacuum packed lahat ng rice sa FFPs natin. (If possible, it would be better if all the rice in our FFPs are vacuum packed,)” he adds.
