March Is Women’s Herstory Month!

Let’s read the story of a single mother and a Pantawid beneficiary from Villaba Leyte who is empowered by reaching heights through the help of the 4Ps.

The Pantawid Pamilyang Pilipino Program became instrumental in changing the course of the life of Berna Dibdib, a single mother and beneficiary from Villaba, Leyte.

Berna Dibdib was a housewife taking care of her three children. The household’s only source of income came from her ex-husband’s work as a laborer. She felt sorry that she was not able to help in terms of finances. Berna is grateful that the cash grants received from 4Ps helped augment their daily needs and the school expenses of her children.

BOOSTING SELF-ESTEEM

Before becoming a parent leader in the program, Berna lacked the confidence to talk with other people outside the home. It was only when she became a parent leader that she was empowered to take active roles in her community. She realized she could do more.

“Natuto akong humarap [sa mga tao]. Natuto [rin] akong makipag-usap sa mga barangay officials upang makipag-coordinate sa mga schedules sa aming baranggayan],” Berna shared.

REACHING NEW HEIGHTS

Berna Dibdib married at an early age which resulted in her not finishing her elementary studies. She admitted it is difficult to find a living without higher education. She always wanted to provide for the needs of her family. Berna shared how a topic on Alternative Learning Systems (ALS) during a Family Development Session ignited her drive to pursue high school.

Later on, in 2016, she graduated from high school and this paved the way for her to work abroad. Even though it is difficult for Berna to have left her children, she needed to work away from the Philippines for their future especially since she is now a solo parent. It is the mother of Berna who is now attending the monthly FDS and taking care of her children.

At present, Berna’s eldest, Christian, is now 16 years old; her second child, Cindy, is 15 years old; and her youngest, Claire is now 11 years old.

Berna looked at yesterday with optimism. With her perseverance and sacrifice for the family, they now attain a Self-Sufficiency level of well-being.

She now focuses on ensuring that her children will graduate from college.
