On June 9, a fire occurred at the corner of Burgos and Del Pilar St, Barangay 20, Tacloban City. The exact cause of the fire is still under validation by the Bureau of Fire Protection, although initial reports indicate that an unattended candle might have caused the fire. Based on reports received, a total of 19 houses were totally damaged. The fire affected 31 families (109 individuals).

In response to this incident, DSWD’s Disaster Response Operations Monitoring and Information Center (DROMIC) has coordinated with the Office of Civil Defense (OCD), the City Social Welfare and Development Officer (CSWWDO), the Municipal Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (MDRRMO) and the local barangay officials to determine the assistance required.

As of June 13, 2018, DSWD has provided 58 family food packs, containing 6 kilos of rice and 8 assorted canned goods and 180 packs of ready-to-eat chicken arroz caldo. Aside from these food items, DSWD also provided non-food items, including 30 mosquito nets, plastic mats, blankets, two packs of clothing and malong per family, one hygiene kit per family, as well as kitchen utensils such as 30 pieces of plates, bowls, tumblers, pots and pans. Currently, DSWD’s Regional Resource Operations Center (RROC) is on standby alert in case additional relief items are requested.

Also, the MDRRMO provided bed foams, coffee, water and noodles to the affected families, while the CSWDO provided 30 packs of biscuits and 60 pieces of cup noodles. Financial assistance was also provided to the homeowners who lost their houses in the fire.

Over-all, DSWD and the Local Government Unit has provided P227,640.00 worth of assistance to these fire victims.
