The Department of Social Welfare and Development recently conducted a series of site visits across Region VIII to follow-up its Core Shelter Assistance Project (CSAP).

Led by the Disaster Response Management Division OIC Chief Pauline Nadera, DSWD staff travelled to relocation sites in Culaba in Biliran, Inopacan, Hindang and Hilongos in Leyte and Guiuan in Eastern Samar to check the progress of these Core Shelters. As of March 2019, 156 shelters are still under construction. DSWD conducted these site visits to check the status of the construction of these shelters and to address the concerns of the CSAP beneficiaries. The Core Shelter Assistance Project is a housing project built for disaster survivors by disaster survivors. Each of these shelters are environmentally-friendly and structurally strong, able to withstand up to 220 kph of wind velocity, and earthquakes up to intensity 4 on the Richter Scale. Like any other DSWD programs, the CSAP is made possible through the help of partnerships. DSWD, along with several partners, provide the funds for the materials while the beneficiaries themselves build the shelters. DSWD uses the cash-for-work or food-for-work modality to address the needs of the beneficiaries while they build these shelters. The Local Government Unit provides the lot where these shelters are built.
