The DSWD Regional Rehabilitation Center for Youth (RRCY) at Barangay Sto. Nino in Tanauan, Leyte recently held its kick-off activity as it marked its 39 th year of existence. The event started with a thanksgiving mass and program that featured various talents of the 48 Children-In-Conflict-with-Law (CICL) residing in said facility.
DSWD Regional Director, Marie Angela Gopalan, stated in her talk during the opening, that the current theme of this year’s observance, “transforming young lives for a betterfuture,” holds true indeed for the RRCY.
RRCY Officer-In-Charge Georgina Bulasa, who has been serving the RRCY for 21 years, reported that coupled with the physical improvement and expansion of the now 80-bedcapacity Center is the development of the total well-being of the boys.
She bared that among the recent initiatives of the Center is the negotiation with the Department of Education (DepEd) for the opening of a regular school at the Center. Initially, DepEd officials have conducted an ocular inspection of the RRCY’s old building which be turned into four classrooms, eventually.
The DepEd will start formal school sessions for junior and senior high school levels for the minor-residents come June of this year, Bulasa revealed. Meanwhile, the Alternative Learning System classes are still ongoing at the Center. A lot of activities are lined-up till summertime, as competitions on spoken poetry, dance, singing, and sports, to be held every Fridays.#
